So here's the deal. My parents got divorced when I was really young. Like, less than a year old. The divorce decree stated that my mother and father would alternate claiming me for their tax returns each year; this was supposed to happen until I graduated high school. My dad thought it was just until I turned eighteen, but since I'm a stupid bitch and took an extra year to finish high school, I graduated mere days before turning nineteen, so my dad had to pay child support for another year.
Anyway. This year he thought it was his "turn" to claim me. It technically is as stated in the divorce decree, but I'm recognized as an adult and not in school, so the IRS (Internal Revenue Service) rules override the decree. So my mother and stepfather had the right to claim me as a dependent, since my father only paid about $1200 or so in child support for the half-year I was still in school. That's not near what it would take to be able to claim me. He made a mistake and didn't check the rules, and now both my parents are trying to claim me (even though I live with my mom and she should claim me), and they're both gonna get letters from the IRS saying "WHAT THE FUCK, ASSHOLES" and a lovely visit. Then my dad's gonna be charged out the ass with fines and penalties and I feel like it's all my fault. :< He doesn't have a lot of money as it is. I feel like I just screwed everyone over. The fuck do I do?
