Okay, this explains some things
The reason Xbox 360 games continue to improve graphically despite improved hardware is basically hacks, and PC doesn't get those hacks, so they just throw more horsepower at the problem.

I've been saying this for years...

Just remember how lucky we are that a big company like Apple still supports OpenGL, the only major competition for DirectX. Microsoft tried to kill OpenGL with a FUD campaign back in the day, which basically shifted all game development to DirectX and killed the linux/mac game market.

Was browsing through DEFCON vendor websites and came across this. Somewhat of a different direction for this thread, but I figured someone else here may be interested in this sort of stuff as well.

well shit.

the way my computer has been working this past week is absolutely ridiculous. for the first few days, my computer had stopped blue-screening, even after I'd play video games on it. then I got my first blue screen after about 3 days. then this morning, my computer blue-screened for absolutely no reason. I didn't turn it back on until tonight, and when I turned it on, it gave me that dreadful "a disk-read error occurred". luckily when I restarted, it started normally.

so I'm guessing my computer might last for MAYBE another month before it eventually doesn't even let me get to my desktop.

My iTunes keeps pausing like it's buffering... but I'm playing from my library, not streaming Seriously?
I'm working on a project in Revit but I don't think it's taxing my processor THAT hard, I'm keeping an eye on my CPU and that doesn't seem to be it... it's happening even now when I'm just using Chrome.

I once updated the Nvidia driver on my brand new computer and BIOS stopped recognizing my graphics card was plugged in at all. Why is it always such a gamble?

Well I'm getting about 5 fps more in Skyrim Awww Yeaaah

Which sounds like nothing, but I went from 20-25fps to 25-30fps (It's still not enough and jittery as fuck looking, but a lot better)
Also the STUPID SHADOW GLITCH seems to be fixed! I can actually fucking play this game again now!

I think my auxiliary HD is fucked.

BAD_POOL_HEADER blue screen upon accessing My Computer, removing the
second HD eliminates them and putting it back in brings them back.

I will miss you, great storage facility of porn and significantly more important things that I can no longer access :V

OK, network gurus, I haz a question.

I've set up the network in my friend's house. Cat 6 to every bedroom, den, and TV room (some locations getting more than one drop). AT&T DSL modem to an Airport Extreme to a Netgear 24 ProSafe 10/100 switch. Other than funkiness attributed to AT&T (they have a bad habit of losing their PPoE servers every now and then), everything's been hunky-dory. Over christmas, they got a honkin' big LED TV with network connectivity. I wired it in for them and set up the network (which is redundant, since there's an Xbox that can do netflix as well as an apple TV in there).

A couple of days after hooking it in, the network would disappear at random. Any wired devices would be unable to see anything, but wireless devices still worked. Reboot everything and it would come back for a while, then repeat the problem after 6 hours or so. Swapped out the Airport with another one... worked fine for a few hours, then same problem. While scratching my head, noticed that port 10 on the switch (the one the TV is hooked into) was sending a lot of traffic, based on the activity light. Unplugged port 10, rebooted modem/airport/switch, everything's back. And so far, no more problems.

So... Can a lot of traffic across a non-managed switch knock out connectivity like that? Does the theory that the TV is somehow sending a lot of traffic hold water? And, is there a tool I can use to monitor traffic and see if the TV is sending a lot of traffic?

Maybe related note: When this happens, and you try to turn the TV off with the remote, nothing happens. No response to the remote at all. You have to turn the TV off with the switch on the TV itself.
