Exactly why it's useless. Knowledge and skill doesn't make you employable anymore, a bullshit college diploma does.

It's not about learning; it's about credentials.

You can spout off all day that a degree isn't required to get a good job, but employment and income statistics are against you.

Not that it isn't possible to get your foot in the door without a degree; it's just going to be a whole hell of a lot harder.

In my eyes, a degree provides no credentials whatsoever.

You aren't an employer; your opinion on the matter is largely irrelevant.

I don't care, I'm still gonna point out how pointless and frivolous it all is. I can rest assured knowing I have the common sense not to waste a shitload of money on something that does not matter one bit except for how people have pretended it matters.

It isn't pointless if it fulfills it's purpose.

There are a good number of jobs that simply will not hire you without credentials in the field.

If you had common sense that would be intuitively obvious to you.

It doesn't fulfill any purpose at all.

Why? Because those jobs that require a diploma have no purpose to require it. That's how we get "hospitals" like Killer Kaiser Permanente.

How about employers actually sit down and gauge credentials and knowledge. You know, actually have proof that they know what they're talking about?

All the diplomas do is streamline the process of finding qualified people and provide loopholes that morons can abuse.

There is no efficient way to test every applicants aptitude for complex subjects like medicine.

People take years of classes on these subjects for a reason: it is a lot of information to process and memorize.

The diploma is a certification from an accredited third party that you know enough about your subject to be able to perform the tasks your profession requires.

If you want to argue that it should be the duty of employers to train their employees, well, it's a debate you lost a long time ago; it's simply easier for businesses to outsource the training.

You can't just let any dickhead with a diploma try and take care of people. That's how people get clamps sewn into their bodies after surgery.

I don't care about how easy it is for companies, they shouldn't be sacrificing quality for ease. People fucking die that way.

I was killed by my doctor just last week. Let me till you how much of a drag it is.

In the context of employing medical professionals, you desire to employ a qualified worker who can fulfill the requirements of his/her job with as little wasted time (and therefore resources) as possible. A 3rd party education system allows this because as you said, it streamlines the process of putting qualified specialists in the job market without burdening companies with financial costs that would likely bankrupt them (I assume in your ideal world companies would train people for free) due to the sheer number of people who would not make it through the training and thus not become employees worth the investment.

Furthermore, if you're a doctor who is attempting to start his own practice there are many hoops you have to jump through in order to legally practice medicine independently including a lengthy stay in medical school.

I'm curious, in your ideal world how would I know I could trust a doctor if I wasn't able to see his med school diploma hanging on the wall? Should I give him a pop quiz on subjects I probably know very little about?

And guess what? People would die less if doctors actually knew what they were doing.

More efficient, right there.

Unless your hospitals are more preoccupied with money, in which case that doesn't fight my stance that it's all an incredibly stupid system.

Would you like to answer the questions I put forward or should I take the liberty of assuming you can't account for those problems?

1. I wouldn't care if my doctor had a diploma or not in his office, both the possession of a diploma and the lack of a diploma mean fuck all.
