People get fast cars and motorcycles mainly as bragging rights to how fast you can go, not necessarily how fast they will actually drive them. But more horsepower also = better acceleration and that's a lot more important than top speed.

Plus you never know, you could be chased by the T-1000, it's good to be prepared

Yes and no on the deathwish thing. On a track, no. On an empty straightaway highway between Grand Junction and Vegas, not necessarily. Anywhere which requires you to weave through traffic or decelerate just as quickly as you accelerated? Yeah... also doing wheelies down the highway is asking for it.

Where the acceleration comes in the power band is also an issue. On faster bikes they tend to "open up" after you get to 60MPH or so, which is also where you're spending most of your time not being. Keep in mind, a $10,000 motorcycle can generally accelerate faster than an $80,000 sports car anyway, if not faster, so this is a comparison of motorcycle to motorcycle. My $4500 bike is still going to accelerate faster than 90% of cars on the road, albeit by a much narrower margin than a more expensive bike.

And fuck yeah gas savings. I'm not looking to compensate for anything, I just want a bike that I can ride where I like. A trip to Vegas and back would be like $60 IIRC. Sure beats airfare. Hell, at that price I'm beating Greyhound even.
