wtf, preview is a terrible application for saving pictures. I reduce the dpi from 330 to 72 and the size from 1800 pixels wide to 1440 pixels wide, and the filesize increases? Ahh well it's under a megabyte but it still bothers me...

Yeah it is. That's why it's called "preview" and not "imagesaver." It's a lightweight program for previewing images.

If it's a png, you need to find another program that has png compression. If a jpeg, just lower the quality setting in the save dialogue.
